Today: Sammie van Rens, Head of Tool Correction/Maintenance.
His motto: You don't just live once, you only die once - you should enjoy your time and have lots of experiences!
Where do you live?
I live in Zwingen, a small village next to Laufen in the canton of Baselland. We, my girlfriend, her ten-year-old daughter and I, feel very comfortable in this rural environment, centrally located between Basel and the Jura.
What was your "craziest" decision?
To emigrate to Switzerland! I grew up in the Netherlands. It took courage to leave my old life behind and start anew in another country. I decided to live in Switzerland seven years ago. Now I have a wonderful family of my own and I have met a lot of great people - and of course a very interesting job.
What is your greatest personal success, what are you still proud of today?
I used to have several sporting successes in motorbike racing in the 125 CC displacement class and in the Supersport 600. I rode my first race at the age of ten. I achieved several top-3 rankings at national and international level. In 2002, for example, I was vice-champion in the Junior Cup in the Netherlands and in 2006 I finished third in the final classification of the Superstock 600, also in the Netherlands.
At 19, I had a heavy car accident in Italy and ended my motorbike racing career. I am very happy that I am 100% healthy again and can live my life without any restrictions.
What are your hobbies? Everything that has to do with motorbike racing still interests me a lot. Motorbike racing is still a part of my life. Today I follow the races with great enthusiasm, but only on TV, I don't drive myself anymore.
How "digital" are you on the road?
Unfortunately, almost everyone is very digitally on the go. I have the feeling that digital media have a very strong influence on living together and therefore many things are changing rapidly, and not always to our advantage.
But it is important to keep up to date. And that's why I have a smartphone, which I use for pretty much everything myself; for emails, as a navigation aid, and social media platforms like Facebook and more.
Sammie van Rens has been working at Aluminium Laufen AG since 2014 and he is responsible for the tool correction and maintenance department. His enthusiasm for metals, the material aluminium in particular and especially for extrusion tools has accompanied him since childhood. His father had already worked in the same profession and as a child he was often allowed to accompany his father to the workshop. So, it was only natural that Sammie van Rens chose and completed an apprenticeship as a polymechanic.
