Aluminium - A Success Story

Aluminium has become indispensible in our day to day lives. After steel, it is the most important metal in practical use. Did you know that, after oxygen and silicon, aluminium is the third most common element, and the most common metal, in the Earth's crust?

Its success is due to properties that make it useful in many ways:

  • Low density: At 2.7 g/cm3, aluminium is a light metal, ideal for energy-saving lightweight construction.
  • High conductivity: Aluminium has approximately 60% of the conductivity of copper. Therefore, it is well adapted for electronics and electrical engineering. Its high heat conductivity is used in the construction of machines, in air-conditioning, and in the construction of household objects.
  • Resistance to corrosion: Due to a natural oxide layer, aluminium proves to be resistant to corrosion from water and many chemicals. Therefore, it is long-lasting and low-maintenance.
  • Workability: Due to its very high ductility, aluminium is easy to shape using current processes.
  • Fire resistance: Massive aluminium does not burn, and therefore improves protection from fire in buildings, transport and other constructions.
