Under the new registration and identification system for economic operators in the EU, national customs numbers have been replaced by the so-called Economic Operators Registration and Identification Number EORI.

Economic operators who are involved in activities covered by customs law in the course of their business activities must have an EORI number. This also applies to Swiss exporters to the EU.
