Explained in a nutshell: What is a metallography laboratory?

Our new metallography laboratory has been in operation for a few months now. Metallography laboratory - what is it? In today's edition of our "Explained in a nutshell" series, we briefly explain what a metallography laboratory is and what we are analysing there.

The scientific examination of metals is known as metallography. In metallography laboratories, the internal structures of metals are analysed, the quality of the metallic microstructure is assessed and the properties of the material are derived from this. For this purpose, samples are prepared in order to visualise the microstructure, its deformations and any cracks, fracture surfaces or other material defects.

We check the metallographic structure of our aluminium components in our in-house metallography laboratory:
  • for regular quality control
  • to ensure that the conditions agreed with the customer are met
  • to support our CIP process (= Continuous Improvement Process) in order to continuously optimise our service quality
  • or, if necessary, to analyse damage
In this way, we ensure that the performance characteristics of the finished aluminium components, such as pressure vessels that are subjected to bending stress, meet customer requirements 100%.

The quality of our products and work processes is constantly monitored and optimised. In addition to standard tests, trained personnel carry out and document customer-specific tests. In this way, we ensure that our cast or extruded components fulfil their task correctly right from the start.
