Heat and hydrogen from recycled aluminium

The SPF Institute for Solar Technology at the OST - Ostschweizer Fachhochschule has developed a process to generate heat and electricity from aluminium.

The main objective of this project, called AlEnCycles, is to compare the two feedstocks of recycled and primary aluminium for energy use in buildings.

Challenge: One of the unsolved problems of the energy transition is the storage of larger amounts of renewable energy over a longer period of time. New solutions are being developed to heat houses with renewable energy, especially in winter, without substantially increasing the demand for electrical energy. Covering the winter demand for heat and electricity with local renewable energies is currently only possible in niches or would be coupled with high costs today.

Project status: The first chemical experiments have been successfully carried out. The SPF Institute for Solar Technology was able to observe the reaction behaviour and optimise the course of the experiments.

We are pleased to be one of the five industrial partners supporting the research project.
